Algae are a very common pool maintenance issue. If your water has a green color or visible growth can be seen on pool walls or floor you could have algae contamination. This microorganism can quickly spread and within hours turn water chemistry. Algae is not always green it can also be a yellow, black or brown in color.
Things You’ll Need:
Pool algaecide
Pool shock treatment
Pool water testing strips
Pool brush
Step1
Remove any visible debris from the pool.
Step2
Adjust the pH of the pool. Chlorine pool chemicals are formulated to work best within the 7.2 to 7.4 range. Chlorine compounds are not as effective in water with a high pH.
Step3 Treat the pool with a high quality Algaecide. To guarantee results, read the label to assure the species of algae present will be suppressed.
Step4 Shock the pool to remove any residual chemical and restore chlorine levels.
Step5 Run your filtration system. Backwash sand or DE filters; this will clean the filter after the treatment. If you have a cartridge system you may choose to clean or change your filter at this time.
Step6 Clean your pool. Brush the sides and bottom to remove any algae still present.
Step7 If the algae bloom persists, you may want to have your water tested. High levels of nitrates, phosphates or other contaminants can limit chlorine activity.
