Trees are an important aspect of our environment. A single tree can provide enough oxygen for a family of four. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, provide food and shelter for animals, filter dust and pollutants and help prevent erosion. Trees and their many benefits have been celebrated on the last Friday in April since 1872. Here are a few ways you and your children can join in the celebration of National Arbor Day...
Step1 During the weeks before Arbor Day, help your children choose a tree. Parents can pre-screen trees at arborday.org to determine what trees will do best in your area. Show your child what the full-grown tree will look like and let them pick which one they would like to plant.
Step2 Let your children help to choose the spot to plant your new tree. Check with the local utility companies before planting to make sure you won't be digging near underground cables or pipes.
Step3 On Arbor Day, make a celebration out of planting your new tree. Allow your child to make the event as personal as possible, such as naming the tree and by helping to plant and care for it. Tree hugging, while encouraged, is optional. You can even plan a cook-out or backyard party for your children and their friends to celebrate the event of planting the tree.
Step4 Make caring for your Arbor Day tree a tradition and a celebration. Trees provide us with so much good that it only makes sense to teach our children to celebrate that good. Your Arbor Day celebration can turn into an event that will be celebrated in years to come with your grandchildren, and their children and so on.
